In May, we bravely crossed the Channel to attend PunchedCON in Coventry: several glorious days spent pushing pawns, sipping tea (beer), and asserting without batting an eyelid that ‘the demo lasts barely 30 minutes’ (spoiler: yes for Austerlitz and no for Brandywine).

Yves Roig and Andy Loakes shaking hands after a game on Austerlitz – Coup de Tonnerre!
Andy Loakes (left) and Yves Roig (right) at the end of a fierce game of Austerlitz – Coup de Tonnerre!

    On the agenda:
Brandywine, 1777 – A Time For Heroes, heroically presented and adjusted on the battlefield (everything is historical, even the unexpected).
Austerlitz – Coup de Tonnerre!, fine-tuned with my friend Andy Loakes, game developer and proud local — living proof that Napoleon never really left England (at least in the special rules).

    What can we remember?

    • British players are sharp, curious, and extremely polite.
    • You can talk about cavalry tactics and biscuits in the same sentence.
    • Coventry knows how to welcome wargamers (even without rain, which is saying something).

    Will we go back?
Of course. As sure as tea is strong and the order of milk or tea divides households.
Thank you PunchedCON — see you next year, dear friends!

Hello to all history buffs, avid gamers, families looking for new fun adventures… and anyone who loves seeing the past come to life around a table!

At Les 3 Zouaves, we have a simple belief: history (with all its highs and lows, heroes and darker figures) is an INCREDIBLE playground. So we decided to dust off the textbooks and transform key events into captivating gaming experiences.

Our secret recipe? Game mechanics that are as simple as pie, but with a strategic depth that will tickle your brain. No more lengthy rules that discourage you before you even start playing! Our ambition is to offer you games where the pleasure of playing takes precedence over complexity. We want you to spend more time immersing yourself in the action than deciphering a dense rulebook.

And what about emotion? That’s at the heart of our project. We want each game to be an adventure, a moment of intense sharing. We want you to feel the tension of a decisive battle, the pride of a hard-won victory, or even the melancholy of an honourable defeat. Our games are designed to make you experience a range of emotions, whether you’re playing alone, with a partner, with friends or with family.

Carré Histoire – Cannes 2025: we were there, we held out, and we (almost) survived!

In early 2025, we arrived at the FIJ’s Carré Histoire like a battalion on a mission: Gettysburg, Brandywine, and a few nuggets from our Sound of Drums comrades under our arm.

Valentin was making heroic charges on Brandywine,
Sébastien was holding the line at Gettysburg from time to time, but often on the offensive!
And I, Yves Roig, provided logistical, strategic and tactical support… and caffeine.

    Two prestigious generals accompanied us:
Uwe Walentin, in Blitzkrieg mode, with Assault, Hellas, Eylau – three fronts, zero prisoners.

Jason St Just, a revolutionary through and through, presented 1793 – Traitors and Patriots with as warm a welcome as a speech by Danton.

    The result?
Lots of people, lots of laughter, lots of sweaty fun, enthusiastic feedback,
    Little sleep,
But above all: a huge amount of pleasure shared with all the fans who came to see us!

Would you do it again? Of course we would. But give us a week’s nap first.

    Description

Brandywine, 1777 – A Time for Heroes is a strategic game in which players take on the role of either General Howe or Washington.

The game is based on the coordinated activation of military formations. Each side has a limited number of Activations, represented by Activation Cards, which allow it to move and fight, deploy Columns, build Redoubts and… do nothing (sometimes the best option!).

Each Formation’s Cohesion decreases as it acts, but it also generates momentum, represented by Momentum Cubes. These are used to acquire Tactical Cards, which offer special actions that can have an impact on the course of the battle, and to re-roll the dice during a battle.

    Why Brandywine ?

It all started with a comment…

After Gettysburg – A Time for Heroes, I was looking for the next project. An embryonic campaign about Gettysburg was maturing, but nothing really took off.
Then one day I came across a post by an American gamer talking about Gettysburg. Comment:

« Brandywine with those mechanics would be awesome! »

Brandywine? The name sounded familiar, but nothing more. I started reading… and discovered a fascinating battle: 1777, the Revolutionary War, Washington caught off guard by a daring British manoeuvre. The American general didn’t know where the main enemy columns were until it was almost too late.

    Click.
    I had my idea 💡.

The challenge was to bring this uncertainty to life on the map, without any cloak or artifice. The American player must feel the tension of the times, and like Washington, discover the truth… at the critical moment.

    Brandywine was born.
